[2014 ACCME Annual Report, Commentary with ACCME President and CEO, Dr. Graham McMahon]
>>McMAHON: Hi, I’m Graham McMahon. I am the President and CEO here at the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, and I’m delighted to be with you to present the results that are in our annual report for 2014.
[The 2014 Annual Report includes data from more than 1,900 accredited continuing medical education providers.]
>>McMAHON: Accredited CME offers physicians and healthcare teams a range of resources to promote quality, safety, and the evolution of healthcare.
[CME providers in the ACCME System offered more than 147,000 educational activities in 2014 — comprising more than 1,000,000 hours of instruction. These CME activities included more than 25 million interactions with physicians and other healthcare professionals.]
>>McMAHON: The diversity of the accredited CME system allows engagement with physicians and other healthcare providers where they live, work, and learn.
[CME providers represent a spectrum of organizations — from large, national specialty societies to small rural hospitals. This diversity of locations and institutions enables CME to be flexible, nimble, and responsive to healthcare needs on the local, regional, national, and international level.]
>>McMAHON: Accredited CME is not just about lectures. [GRAPHIC: pie chart of Activity Types by Participant Interactions.] Our provider community is offering a range of resources to our healthcare professionals to drive the highest quality in learning—relevance, efficiency, effectiveness is prioritized to drive quality throughout the educational cycle.
[The range of activity types is important to ensure that physicians and teams can find activities that meet their individual needs and learning preferences.]
>>McMAHON: Accredited CME aims to change more than just what people know. It’s also designed to change attitude, skills, performance—even patient health outcomes.
[Almost 100% of activities are designed to change learners’ competence — meaning the education gives them strategies for translating new knowledge into action. More than 60% are designed to change learners’ performance — what they actually do in practice. More than 30% are designed to change patient outcomes.]
>>McMAHON: Accredited CME is a healthy and growing enterprise.
[CME providers nationally reported approximately $2.6 billion in income in 2014. The majority of the income comes from registration fees, government grants, private donations, and institutional allocations.]
>>McMAHON: I really hope that you find our annual report useful as a resource to you. I think it terrifically communicates the scope, diversity, and value of our shared CME enterprise. I look forward to hearing from you, and your feedback about the report, and discussing any elements of it with you that you think would be helpful.
I thank you for the work that you’re doing to get the data into our systems, to allow us to prepare compilations, such as our annual report. And I certainly appreciate the remarkable work that you do every day—not to just enhance the learning of our community, but also the health of our nation.
Thank you!
